Jenni’s Backstory

Jennifer “Jenni” Park was born on March 19th of 1987, in a hospital right outside the city limits of Chicago, Illinois. Her father was a blue collar worker at a galvanizing facility, working 12 hour days and her mother worked nights cleaning offices. Her father was an immigrant from Mexico, her mother an American born Italian. Jenni is the oldest of two, her brother Jesse being 5 years younger. Though they didn’t have much growing up, she never knew it. Their lives were always filled with food, fun and music. Her grandparents on her mother’s side always had family barbecues that would end in evenings around a fire pit with children making s’mores, music playing and Jenni standing on her grandfathers feet while they danced around the yard.
Right around the time Jenni turned 10, her father passed away from a heart attack. Her mother was inconsolable, not only did she lose the love of her life but also the person who was responsible for keeping everything in order. Though they were saved financially by his profit sharing earnings, it took a long time for her mother to get herself out of her depression. Because of this, Jenni had to step up and be the “mother figure” for her younger brother by making lunches, helping with homework and making sure he got to the bus stop on time.
Summers were her favorite time of year, school was out and it was the only time she was allowed to be a “kid” because she’d get to spend them with her grandparents. They would do fun things like go to baseball games or the theater, sometimes they’d even take special vacations. On the year of her 18th birthday, for summer break her grandparents took her to NYC and Jenni fell in love with it right away. The bustling streets, the multicultural variety, how the city never “sleeps” was all so intriguing to her. She loved that all in the same day you could go to the theater, see a baseball game and have dinner in a celebrity filled restaurant. She felt so ALIVE when she was there that she vowed to one day move there.
Sadly, later that summer, her grandparents died in a car accident. Once again Jenni was forced to take on a parental role as their mother fell into a dark depression. Sacrificing her further education, she stayed home and made sure her brother finished school and her mother just made it to the next day. When her brother graduated, Jenni was so excited, not only would HIS life begin but she believed so would hers. After the graduation ceremony, their mother sat them down and informed them that she had a rare type of bone marrow cancer that, though it was treatable, it was not curable. They all cried that night, Jenni the hardest because she promised her mother and brother that she would stay with their mom so he could continue to go to school and not loose the scholarship he’d earned.
The next 8 years went by in a blur of weekly doctors visits, chemotherapy appointments and two bone marrow transplants. Unfortunately, the second transplant was not as successful as the first and Jenni was forced to make some tough decisions in regards to her mother’s health and care. Hospice care was started and Jenni, having only been able to work part-time before, quit her job to spend as much time as possible with her mother in her final weeks. Though she’ll always look back on them with fondness, those were the most difficult days of her life. Watching her mother slowly deteriorating and there being nothing she could do really took its toll. But the flip side was when her mother was feeling good and they would sit and talk about things, sometimes for hours. In her final days, Jenni’s mom chose more serious topics like love, life and loss. Though it was hard, Jenni stayed strong and held her moms hand, listening and comforting her whenever it was needed.
On her mother’s final day, when her breathing was a struggle and just keeping her eyes open was a chore, she and her mom had the most important conversation of them all. “Jenni, Mija, there are so many things I wish I had done....” she said in a raspy voice, “I wanted to go places, to see things... but I fell for your father and stayed put.” “I know Amá,” she chuckled as she squeezed her mother’s hand “You saw his stupid, handsome face and that was it.” “Yes, I forgot about Niagara Falls, about the Statue of Liberty, about Mount Rushmore, about San Francisco....” her voice was getting weaker, the visiting hospice nurse standing near the bed with a somber look on her face. “Did you regret it Amá? Falling in love and having kids?” “NO!” she said it with as much feeling as her treatment beaten body could muster, “But I do regret not having done those things with your father before he passed. It made me very unhappy these last few years, thinking of all the things we should have done.” “Oh, Amá...” she whispered, trying to hide the sadness in her voice. “Promise me something Mija,” her mother whispered, just barely audible. “Anything, what is it?” Jenni asked, kissing her almost lifeless hand. “Promise me you’ll do all the things you want? Life is too short, to be unhappy.” “I will, I promise.” she whispered, holding her mother’s hand to her cheek, tears streaming down her face. Her mother’s arm went limp and the nurse stepped in to check all her vitals, nodding to let her know her mother had passed.
After that, Jenni sold all unnecessary possessions, took all the money she had in her savings and kept her promise to her mom. She moved to NYC, where she believed she would find happiness.
